Marble is still a byword for luxury — the moment people see a white surface with grey or golden veining, they instinctively think “expensive and beautiful”. The trouble is that real marble is demanding: it is soft, it absorbs water and oil, it needs sealing at regular intervals, and lemon juice or wine leave stains that will not come out. That is precisely why designers have increasingly turned to marble-effect tiles in recent years — a surface that visually rivals the stone, yet behaves like hard porcelain.

What is a marble-effect tile

An effect tile is a porcelain stoneware (gres porcellanato) tile onto which the surface of real marble, stone or concrete is transferred by digital printing. The factory scans a slab of natural stone at extremely high resolution, and a multi-pass inkjet process then recreates the veining, tonal transitions and depth directly on the porcelain. The best collections use several dozen different “faces”, so adjacent tiles never repeat and the floor does not read as a copied pattern.

The essential point to grasp: only the look is imitated, not the material. Beneath the print sits the same dense porcelain stoneware, with water absorption below 0,5 %. The tile therefore inherits every property of porcelain — hardness, resistance to moisture and frost — and adds the luxurious look of natural stone without its drawbacks.

Please note: our effect tiles reproduce marble, natural stone and concrete — not wood. If it is a wood look you are after, genuine engineered oak flooring or SPC vinyl with a wood décor is the better choice.

Marble-effect vs real marble

The main question clients ask is “is it really worth giving up natural marble?” Below is an honest comparison across the properties that matter for everyday care.

In short: real marble is beautiful but temperamental. In a kitchen or hallway, where water, grease and cleaning chemicals are a daily reality, an effect tile will serve for decades with next to no upkeep. Real marble “ages” in those spaces within a few years — dull patches appear wherever oil or lemon juice has dripped.

If you love a bold, dramatic focal point, choose the Calacatta-style Empire tiles — their deep veining looks superb in a large format and becomes the centrepiece of a room. For a softer, richer effect, Onyx Ivory with its pearlescent transitions is the better fit. The concrete motifs (Sterling Grey, Polar) suit those who want a minimalist, “quiet” backdrop that furniture is easy to style against.

Why large format and rectification matter

In nature, marble is one large continuous slab — so for the imitation to convince, the tile should be as large as possible with the narrowest possible joints. Our core format is 60×120 cm — a module this size reduces the number of joints in the floor and lets the veining “flow” without constant interruptions.

The second technical point is rectification. This means the fired tile is additionally trimmed to a perfectly precise size, so every piece is exactly the same. A practical tip: large-format rectified tiles are best laid on the flattest possible substrate, using a levelling system (the familiar “clips and wedges”). If you are unsure how flat your subfloor is, or you want the veining to form one continuous picture, it is worth bringing in an experienced tiler — professional installation typically costs 18–30 €/m², depending on the format and the complexity of the room.

Where marble-effect tiles belong

Thanks to minimal water absorption and high resistance, effect tiles suit practically every room in the home:

The one place that calls for caution: a polished (gloss) marble-effect surface can be slippery when wet, so for bathroom floors or stairs choose a matt or structured finish with a higher R rating.

Can a marble-effect tile be told apart from real marble?+

At first glance — barely. Modern digital printing reproduces the veining with remarkable precision, and the large 60×120 cm format with narrow joints brings the look even closer to a natural slab. You only sense the difference by touch: an effect tile is colder, harder and smoother than porous natural marble.

Do effect tiles need sealing like real marble?+

No. The porcelain stoneware body is virtually non-absorbent (water absorption below 0,5 %), so no sealing or impregnation is ever needed. Routine cleaning with a damp cloth is enough. This is one of the biggest advantages over natural marble, which needs resealing every 6–12 months.

Are marble-effect tiles suitable for underfloor heating?+

Yes, ideally so. Dense porcelain conducts heat efficiently and does not deform with temperature swings, which makes it one of the best coverings for water-based or electric underfloor heating. Just be sure to lay the tiles with a suitable flexible adhesive and run the system in gradually after installation.
